Hunter advertises this boat as a single-handed day sailor that fits six. Is there a safe way of getting from motoring to sailing with one person? I don’t think it is possible. How would you get the main up and keep the tiller straight?

Tiller Tamers

Check out the archives... August of 2003. Search for tiller tamer and 170. You should find several posts detailing several Tiller Tamer options. Some commercial, some home made. Either work well. The one word of caution about any Tiller Tamer with the 170 (or any boat for that matter). If a tamer is engaged and the boat is moving forward and balanced, when you get up and move about, as you change port/starboard balance of the boat, the boat will turn toward the high side (this is why you need to make tiller adjustments and compensate as a boat powers up and starts to heel...rounding up...turning towards the high side). Try to keep the boat balanced by shifting your weight as you do your thing away from the tiller. You will notice that you can steer a boat simply by shifting your weight port and aft under light winds if you understand this concept of water line shape of the hull. This is also why you loose your nice line of direction as waves pound under the side of your hull...your bow moves port and starboard...back and forth in harmony with the waves. Why? Changing waterline shape of the hull! A little theory always helps. Good Luck. Rusty

Single handing

Switching from motor to sail is just one challenge I've found when single handing. Getting the centerboard down/up (I launch from a shallow dock) can be fun in windy conditions. It's important to completely loose the mainsheet and not be oriented for a downwind leg - that way the sail will luff as you raise it. With the sail luffing you should not get going until you trim the sail. You might set motor just fast enough to keep the rudder in trail but I've never tried that while raising the main. Hope this helps some.
