I have a drop-keel model catalina 22. Everything about it is great except for one thing, the humming cable underwater. If anyone has ideas on how to stop this, or knows how to stop this please tell me. I choose to sail for a reason, and when that cable starts signing, its amazing how much my catalina starts to sound like a jet-ski. Thanks! Ced

One more turn

of the keel winch and the sound will go away. The reason is that the keel is not fully lowered and therefore the cable is taut. If you lower the keel one more crank, or until the line become slack, the humming will stop. Regards, Ted

The Hummer

Hello Madislander: My humming keel cable is my knotmeter! I just love that sound because then I know that I am making good headway. Ted has the answer. Happy humming, Bob B.

Get used to it!

My C 22, which I had for 15 years, used to hum all the time, and someone told me that's to let you know the boat is moving! The only way you stop it is to have the keel fully up and tight....I don't recommend sailing that way. Enyoy...and hum along.

Slack Cable

I was given a 1976 C-22 back in 1998 that had no keel. I had a new keel installed. For two straight years, the keel cable broke resulting in the keel being down, which was OK, except I had a bit of a bar to navigate when leaving and returning to my slip. After the second replacement, I talked to the folks at Catalina Direct about what I might be doing wrong or what might be going wrong with the cable. I had been letting the cable go slack to get rid of the "singing." CD asked me where the cable was breaking and pretty much determined that it was breaking at the point where the cable went into the keel connecting rod. CD told me that it was flexing too much and thus weakening. After that, I always made sure that the cable was taut; I lowered it down all the way until it went slack, then cranked a turn or two. I never had the problem again.

The hummer

I stopped my humming by tying a strip of leather 1x5 to the cable Then slack off 1/2 turn It acts the same as a bowstring silencer Uwe
