I can't find the right tension on my keel cable to keep it from humming above about 4 knots. It is taking away from the sailing experience. Has anyone found a cure for humming keel cables?

Enjoy it.....

Took me a while to get used to it, but I enjoy it now, and when if kicks in, I know we are moving at a good pace... I don't think there is anything you can do about it.

Hummmm

Loosen way up on your keel cable! Let it all the way out man!! Loose as possible. Don't sweat having any cable on the winch barrel, the cable won't stop your keel from dropping off your boat if it is going to drop off. The cable is only for lifting. If you can't loosen up on it due to it being at the end in the winch barrel, let some turns from the excess wrap out on the barrel. If you can't or don't want to do that, buy a new cable from Catalina Direct, the cables are pretty cheap and made to the right length. If that's not an option for you, get used to the humm. The sailing experience is never perfect, near perfect... but never perfect. Campy out

My wife and I sail a CAT22 and enjoy it more than we ever expected. We also experience the "hummmm" while cruising. It kicks in as we speed up and also kicks out when we are really moving along. It has become part of our sailing experience. I would think something was wrong if it suddenly stopped.

Humming Terminated

Good advice on putting a lot of slack in the keel cable. I did, and the humming is gone. Thanks, Mike.

When it humms, back off 1 more turn.

That 1 extra turn will always stop the hum from your now new highest speed of the day. It is good for all the speeds you ran before it. Now you're ready for the "TWANG". That occures just after you break free and starte planing off a 8 foot wave, and the cable snaps out of the water. Ray
