Hull-to-Deck through bolts question

I looked at a 1976 Albin Vega last week in Washington. She was clean
and very nice, but looking over the topsides I noticed that nearly
all the through bolts had a 3/4 to 1 inch cresent shaped crack
radiating from the head of the bolt toward the interior of the boat.
I could see a few of the bolts from below and there didn't appear to
be any leaking or damage. I'm not sure if they are cosmetic or
indication of stress damage. The mast had not been reinforced, but
there was no visible signs of damage to the deck around the mast or
below. Any idea's on what I saw? Thanks, Annon George

Hi

The hull to deck join is buffeted by a non-setting sealing compound. If a leak appears then most just tighten them down a bit more. It will not be stress related and just an effect of over zealous tightening. Dont worry about it.

Most Vegas do not need the mast re-enforcement kit. Only need it if the Vega has been raced hard and the rigging has been really tuned to piano tight. The kit only costs about £100 and is quite simple to fit so again dont worry.

The Vega is a fine boat, you will not be disappointed.

Kind Regards
