Hull to deck leak

I was pretty sure I had a leaky stanchion. So sure that I removed it before figuring out it is actually a small hull to deck leak about a foot aft of the first stanchion aft of the pull pit on the starboard side. So, at least I have rebed a stanchion, which was easy enough, but I still have to deal with the leak. :neutral:

I'd really like to avoid pulling off a significant portion of the toe rail for a first shot at this. I plan to pull the offending bolt, put some caulk in the hole, re-install and hope for the best.

Anyone run into this before?

I had a leak in the rear corner of the hull to deck joint. Mine was easy in that I just removed the rear dock line cleat and corner bracket and used tons of 5200 when reinstalling. If it is from the bolt, just reseal with a lot of 5200.

Sounds like you did it from the outside. That is what my concern is. Worst case I figure I can remove the toe rail from the bow to the mast and reseal everything, but will try just to pump a little sealer in the bolt hole, as it seems to be localized to the bolt area. I don't think I will use 5200, just in case I need to remove it afterwards. I haven't worked with 5200 yet, but I know it really gets solid.

I sealed my chainplates with 5200. I had to remove one a few weeks ago and it wasn't bad. I slid a 5 in 1 painter's tool under the cover plate all around it and cut any excess with a knife. It came right up. You could use 4200. It's a little weaker.

Maybe I'll ask Mainesail if he has ever used the butyl tape he recommends for chain plates. Lord knows I have enough of it now (100ft)!

Pull the bolt, seal the threads about 1" down and reinstall it. You could also run a fillet of seal along the inside and outside of the toe rail, you don't need much. I removed the starboard forward section of the toe rail last summer and resealed the whole thing. The only fussy part was reattaching the hull lining canvas that covered the bolt ends inside. No leaks.
