HULL STAINS

Does anyone know of a product that will remove the stains on a hull left by rainwater runoff? Water runoff through the toerail channels have left terrible black stains on the side of my ODay 28. Incidentally, several months ago I posted a similar request concerning rust stains created by steel wool fibers. I had used steel wool to refinish the exterior teak. The fibers collected in the water channels and left rust stains all over the boat. Several people recommended oxalyic acid, which is sold at Lowes/Home Depot as wood bleach. Tried it and it worked like a charm. Thanks to those who recommended it.

Rain Stain Removal

We also own a travel trailer as well as our Coronado 25. The trailer also acquires the black "rain stains" that you are talking about. I do not recall the exact brand, but going to an RV dealer and asking will render a choice of products that are expressly made to remove those annoying "rain stains". Be sure to tell the dealer that you are looking for something for fiberglass. Steve

Try 'SuperClean'

Hi Jerry, On the Chesapeake I use a diluted spray bottle (50/50) of "SuperClean" (purple jug) which is found in the automotive section of WalMart. You can find it elsewhere but the gallon jug is the cheapest I've found @ $5.00 to $7.00. I have several dilutions in various spray containers and use it for a variety of jobs from degreasing engines to laundry stains. Don't think full strength will make it easier cause this stuff is powerful...read the label you'll be amazed...spray on brush or spounge and rinse. Good Luck, Lance

Maybe the easiest

Is just use a cleaner/wax, some of the new products of this type do a great job. Just spray them on, wipe off. I use Collonite brand cleaner, then use Collonite fleet wax, a lot more work.

What works for me is

plain ol' Soft Scrub (w/bleach) that you get at the supermarket. I had bird stuff plus black stains caused by spiders that were proving difficult to remove. After trying a couple of expensive marine type products (e.g. FSR, for one) that didn't touch the stains, someone recommended Soft Scrub applied with a sponge. Worked great, is cheap and readily available. Life is good! (I suspect that it takes wax off as well, but you have to rewax the hull periodically anyway.)
