Hull speed

Hi everyone, Looking to buy a Vega. I sailed one back in the late 70's in strong trades in the Hawaiian channels doing at least 6.5+ knots. I was wondering how she does both into the wind & off in 10 to 13 knots of wind? Mahalo, JOHN

Hi all, I don\'t want to brag but Lyric has exceeded 12 knot over the ground. We were running under the Golden Gate with on an incoming tide while surfing some fair sized rollers at the time. I don\'t recall any feeling that we were out of control but the
period of the waves was fairly long.  We learned about squared waves later on during out learning curve. For those who aren\'t aware squared waves are when the interval in seconds is the same or shorter than the wave height. The fishing boats would stay in
port when that was happening.   Walt

John,  where are you located?

The designer gave a pretty accurate description of sailing the vega at different wind speeds and with suitable sail combinations at those speeds in the owners manual.  Give it a look over:

www.albinvega.co.uk

Per Brohäll THE VEGA HANDBOOK Contents • Forward • Technical Data • Thoughts behind Vega • First launching and rigging • Advice on sailing and sail handling

The vega will sail easily in wind 10 knots or more.  I was broad reaching at 4 knots with a very light breeze last week under spinnaker while everyone else motored around.

When running with an ocean swell we have the problem of the vega surfing too fast given her wine glass shape.  You begin to lose control of steering as you push 6 knots so consistancy is key.  I think some of our more comfortable sails have
been into the wind and swell.  Upwind, the Vega sails best at a modest 15 degrees of heel and can go fairly tight for a modified full keel.

The best of times surfing g down the face of swells, in my opinion  Salt, 3227. But of course we were experienced surfers and enjoyed the free ride. Combining the two forces, Salt out ran 3 water spouts in the Northwest Province of the Bahamas. Now Salt is on the hard being restored and upgraded from hank on Genoas and broken winches. And so much work is progressing nicely: Volvo 2002 getting required d parts and service, fuel tank removed and cleaned, Cutlass bearing replaced on shaft, companionway boards restored, a through hull transducers on the hull removed that my Dad rigged and filled with fiberglass, etc. Love this old boat and her surfing agility.Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE DroidOn Feb 28, 2017 7:48 PM, "walt judy brown allore bestvega@... Hello All:Newbie here. Planning a renovation of an Albin Vega we found on Cape Cod. Early stages. However, research shows the boats to be quite remarkable and they seem to sail above their rating. I was pleased to read about a Canaries to Barbados run in the early 1970s by a Vega, 13 days. These boats must be amazing off the wind. Upwind speed? Dunno.Norm

Hi John, I was going to say that we recently saw a Vega in the Alawai marina. We just got from 3 week in Hawaii. Weather was beautiful but warmer than I remember from the 5 years I lived there in the 70s. We are in northern California just south of the Oregon
border. Lyric is in the water in Brookings, Oregon. We will be listing her in the near future as my wife has no interest in cold water sailing. She is a Series 1 with a Series 2 mast and has been repowered with a Yammar 2GM20. Judy used to work for West Marine
and she has been extensively redone. I'm still working on the list but so far her replacement value is well over $40,000. She does need a paint job and most of her electronics need replacing. When out of the water she sits on a custom build
galvanized trailer and I also have a 1994 F350 Turbo Diesel work truck to tow her with. Get in touch with me if you think you might be interested. I'll be listing her on the American Vega Association and you might want to check them out for other Vegas that
are on the market. Some with very good pedigrees, none as well equipped.
