Hull Speed

The formula for hull speed is: 1.3 times the square root of the length on the waterline. For the 170, that is 4.7 knots. There is no lwl spec for the 146 on this site. but I would estimate it at around 4.5 knots. But hull speed is much less relevant for either of these boats. Both should plane easily in higher winds, carrying you well beyond hull speed. David Lady Lillie

Yes, the formula for hull speed applies to a displacement hull. Once a hull starts to plane that formula goes out the window.

Decisions. decisions...

Feejer - haven't you decided yet??? ;-) Seems like it boils down to 2 differences for your $3000. -Extra storage up front with the 170. -Ability to put up a spinnaker - it's an option on the 170. For the 146, you would have to do a little bit of work and spend a little bit of money - no spreaders means not the right rigging for a chute. When I flipped the 146 a few days ago, made me realize that I really don't want to be carrying too much up front anyway! I just took her out of the water today, or I would say stop by Danbury on your way to Old Lyme for the factory tour, and sail the 146. I'm still happy with mine - I like the light weight for trailering. Easy to move around on the trailer, both to position it right once out of the water, and then to place it right where you need it once parking it. The 2 of us can move the trailer with the 146 on it up the slight grade to its winter home in our backyard. Good luck to you!

Not Yet

Not yet, One of my problems is I tend to over research things. One of the things I like about the Catalina 16.5 is a "hard" covered place to put a 12 volt battery if I go with a trolling motor. On the other hand I like the idea of a gel coat-less boat hull. We also don't have any sailboat shows around Philadelphia. I missed the Annp in water show and Sail Expo in AC is no longer. I figure I've got a good 4 cold winter months to think about it. The price increase the dealers are talking about is crazy.
