I believe this has been addressed, but I can't find the hull ID numbers on my 1970 V24. I've looked on the starboard side of the transom, scratched at the paint and even looked on the inside of the transom (someone, somewhere posted that it's on the stringer inside the boat). In SC you have to make a rubbing of it or take a picture to get the boat registered. And now that I have the lights working, motor running and rigging set, I want to sail!

Any thoughts/ideas?

Were hull numbers used in 1970? Honestly I don't know. But I do know that if you make a mistake on the registration form one of the nice ladies at SCDNR will call and help you get it right.

My best recollection is molded Hull I.D. numbers became a requirement in roughly 1972 - 73.

on the venture boats, it was drilled into a bulkhead behind the centerboard crank (IIRC).

(looks like a dot matrix printer). think ~2" tall (from other's posts)

Thanks all for the info...I'm ending my son squirming around under the decks looking for these number, so he's hoping we find them quickly!

On my 1970 V21, to see the hull number, you must go head first into the left bunk (facing the bow) and look under the cockpit at the support for the right quarter berth.

You may also find it from the right bunk using a mirror to inspect that support.

NOpe, not in the bow. I took a flashlight and went under both sides of the cockpit. Besides dirtdobber nests and spiders, there's nothing there. My feeling is that there ain't no numbers on this boat. There might have been something on the outside transom in the past, but I think 43 years of painting have erased them.

so front bulkhead then?

Call (803) 734-3857 and ask them how to register a boat with no hull ID. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the number. A friend of mine said if you write a letter explaining that you've tried to find the number but can't, that they will accept it. Especially on a 43 year old boat!

As the boats left the factory they all had hull numbers. As I said they were drilled in the upright string that supports the edge of the bunk. On my 1970 V-21 the hull number is 1584. The different models maintained there own number series. ie there could be a V-24 with the number 1584. I guess that in some ways it was not a hull number but an inventory numbers

I could think of two reasons for the number not being there. One, over 40 years it has been painted so many times the holes have been filled in and can not be seen. Two, a previous owner had to replace that upright stringer under the bunk.

Even though I know were the hull number was there, the last time I tried to register the boat, the inspector was too fat to get to it, so they registered the boat as an un-number hull.

Just to make sure I understand, when you mention bunk, are we talking about the bunks in the cabin, or seating in the cockpit? I once built a small rowboats and the stringers I was used to were supports that ran along side the sides of the boat, attaching the sides to the frame work. This boat has no wood work under the cockpit, it's - as far as I can tell - all fiberglass.

Stringers

On the 21 and early Ventures, the berths that extend under the cockpit were constructed of plywood sheets. The outside of the bunk was cut so that it fit the curve of the hull. The inside of the bunk was a thicker peice of plywood that sat vertically and supported the inside of the bunk (Oposite side from the hull side). This was bonded together with fiber and glassed to hold the whole thing together. In the support board under the cockpit there were holes drilled into the plywood.

a picture of a Venture hull # would probably help. until I saw one posted, I would not have guessed that was a VIN.

Jay do you have a dremel tool? Maybe make your own #. It is of the vintage before #'s were required by law.
