pretty sure it's a 77

Rick - I'm 99% sure the "77" after the m in the hull number refers to the year.

Don't be so sure.

Rick: Don't be so sure about the year. Part of that number has to do when the boat was started in the mfg. process. This is probably 77, the letter in there indicates the month that it was actually sold/completed. There was information in the HOW archives that explains the HIN#, you may want to search there for the facts.

Hull ID's

Here is a link to one website that professes to explain the HIN(Related Link). However I have seen all kinds of exceptions, especially on older Hunters. My own H37C is HUN37074M79H . So it is a Hunter 37, number 074 built. It was built in March(H) of 1979. I think the 'M' is just a way of indicating date. But go to the Owner's directory and do the search on your year and model. Compare the HIN's there with your own. Oh, and do a Forum Archive search for John Cherubini II, probably just "JC". He is an H25 authority and has written extensively about the boat.

It's a 77

Hi. Good Old Boat Magazine published an article in the March/Apr 07 mag explaining how to interpret hull numbers, and they actually use a hunter as the example. It goes something like this: The first 3 characters indicate the manufacturer. The next 5 characters are serial numbers using the manufacturers format. The "M" refers to the type of hull number format being used - M stands for "model year format" or something like that. The next 2 digits refer to the model year, next letter after the year indicates the month, starting with August (L = 12th month, therefore September 1977) and the last digits refer to the boat model/length. For those who haven't seen "Good Old Boat" magazine, it's an excellent subscription for those of us with that type of boat. Happy Sailing! Pete

July 77, not Sep 77

sorry about that. the "L" is the 11th letter, meaning the 11th month after August, which is July. By the way, nobody knows why the picked the starting point as August, by the way. probably just to keep us all on our toes.
