Recently developed a 7" semicircular break in the hull at the rear of the centerboard slot, flooding the space between hull and cockpit. I've done fiberglass repairs before, so not too daunted by that. Wish I knew why it busted there, but no idea. I built a frame to hoist it with electric hoist some years back, for centerboard work. Then, I lowered it onto 4X4s across 55 gal barrels to do the work. For the fiberglass work, it would be easier if I could careen it onto its side. I'm worried about crunching the gunwale/flange area. Has anybody experience doing similar?

The previous owner of my DS II always rolled the boat on her side against a wall to paint the bottom each year. The gunwales are strong enough to do that. If you are going to roll the boat over on a hard surface (concrete, blacktop, etc) I'd use a couple of cushions or at least some wooden blocks to protect it, and give a bit of padding. when he rolled the boat over, the previous owner of my boat did it on grass.

Thanks for the info. I have it up on timbers now, so will probably go ahead with the repair as it sits. Painting on its side would be good though. I have a side jard in wood chips, could dig a little trench for the gunwale. I usually use an ablative bottom paint, as it lives in the water most seasons- this year very much the exception.
