Hello all Planning the work and need advise. I am taking all stripes, above water through hulls and such off the hull and will be compounding it and then waxing it. Also want to put my name / port on the boat with vinyl lettering. Should I compound first then put the name and new through hulls on followed by the waxing so the lettering / silicone sticks to the hull.... Thanks! Greg

Greg: I am also a new boat owner and have read on this forum under archives that you should save the waxing of any name/vinyl decal until after it has been placed on the boat. Compounding shouldn't affect that process! Check the archives as there is probably many posts talking about this process. Greg W De Pere, WI

Aren't you lucky

I just did this. I sanded my entire hull from the toe rail to the bottom paint with 820 sand paper. It took off the old name and stripes quickly. I then wet sanded it with 1500 and again with 2500 wet. Now my hull was very clean and not a speck on her anywhere.( heres where you could wax if you want to), I did the poly glo system. I used the cleaning agent they have. Not that it needed the exta cleaning but I'd rather be safe than sorry along with the screen like sponge and rinsed with water. The hull was dull but very, very clean. Now I applied the new stripes and name. Then applied the poli glo 5 coats and she shines like a wet babies butt. Better than new. And now 6 months later she still looks great. The whole project from start to finish took about 10 hours on a 31 footer. Best part, theres no buffing. Come spring I'll just add another two, maybe three coats of poli glo and go sailing, same day Hope this helps Keep it up, Ctskip

The previous have it right

Ditto on mine, I used Vertglas. Do all the prep work first, then apply your lettering, finally the finish, whether wax or acrylic. Good luck! BTW, NYSail, we are alsmost neighbors...if you want to look at the acrylic finish, drop me an email: chirving(at)hotmail(dot)com.
