Hull painting

This list has been quiet lately and I just thought I would pose this question in hopes of soliciting some advice and generating some traffic. I have a '78 model 22 with a painted red hull. When shined up it looks great however after 3 years (that's how long I've owned her) in the hands of an new sailor there are several scratches and dings that take away from the original luster. Recently, I've finished a bottom job complete with a new boot stripe. As I peeled the masking tape off of the upper edge various sized chunks of red paint peeled right off with the tape. You can imagine my disgust. So now my delima is do I ignore it or do I try to deal poor lines on the boat and just go sailing. A big part want to just ignore it, but the rest of me wants it to look like a boat should - clean unbroken lines. So, I would like to hear from those of you who have painted your hull. I'm curious about man-hours to completion, products and tips you might have to make sure you get a good finish. I would probably brush on as I don't have access to a spray facility unless I travel many, many miles. The link below shows the extensive bottom job. jb

painting the hull sides

I would paint the hull with a good paint. I would recommend Interlux Brightsides with a fine foam roller or a badger hair brush. Check on the Archives for fuller instructions. Also Interlux Toplac is even better, though a bit more expensive. It will cover the current red extremely well. Good luck.

Not nearly as hard as what you did already!

Even if you had to strip it, which is likely if it peeled off with tape, it is just a sand it and paint it kinda job. Most urethanes will give instructions for brush as well as spray application. The primer will also be brand/job specific, but all info is easily obtained. Good luck

You may have to take the paint off

It looks like it was painted with a polyurethane or just a regular boat paint. Since it is chipping, it isn't sticking. More will come off as time goes on. If you like the red color, I would recommend Awlgrip. You will have to take the paint off, but once done with Awlgrip, it will be like new and won't peel or chip. Regards, Ted
