As you might have seen in an earlier post, I have just purchased a 1981 Catalina 22. We just got it to the marina Sunday! With a little more work to do on the outboard I hope to get her in the water in a couple of days! I have 2 questions: 1) where is the Hull number on a 1981 Catalina? 2) Is 87 to 90 pounds too much weight for a outboard motor? (such as a Honda 8 HP 4 stroke) It presently has a 1981 Evenrude 9.9 2 stroke... I wonder if anyone knows how much it weighs) The evinrude is great, but it is noisy and smokey, normal for a 2 stroke, but it is dependable and has a electric start! Thanks for all your help!! Chris

Chris.................. Congratulations on your new purchase...... re: your hull number..... you should have a business card metal plate on the transom which indicates the hull number...... or........ is it on your mainsail? All else fails go here...... it may help: http://www.catalina22.org/manuals/sales/c22sales.htm#14567 re: outboard...... I'll bet that old Evenrude weighs as much as 80-90#. I wouldn't worry too much about a few pounds difference unless you are a racer and are concerned about every ounce. I currently have a Nissan 8HP which probably weighs 80#.......... works great! Think of it this way: it's the weight difference of bringing a small child aboard for a cruise...... you wouldn't give the weight consideration a second thought. Buy the outboard of your choice ..... anything under 10HP will be fine. Good luck!

Number and Motor

Chris, To find out about hull numbers go to the Catalina 22 National Assoc website; www.catalina22.org/techtips/sailnumbers.htm IMHO I would keep the present motor if it runs well. A 4 cycle weights about 25 pounds more than a 2 cycle so before upgrading make sure that the motor mount can take the extra weight. On my boat I've used less than 3 gallons of gas so far this season. Use the money you've saved to upgrade the sailing hardware (if it wasn't already been done). Ted
