Likely on the transom, but lots of old boats have been painted over or buffed out. Something you need for a title or insurance? I've seen some boats with a medallion like placard, and those are almost always gone.
HINs didn't start until late 1972. So, if it's a 197somethingbefore1972, it won't have a HIN. http://www.hinsearchplus.com/hs_userguide.aspx
