Hull number vs. sail number

I picked up a 1985 Catalina 22 a few weeks ago and I'm sure this must have been asked before, but I want to confirm the hull number vs. the sail number. I'm going to get a new mainsail and I've seen some posts suggesting a 1 should be added to the sail ahead of the hull number.
My hull shows 3003, should my sail show that, or 13003?
Thanks!

As far as I know unless you are going to get a number assigned by an association, such as US sailing, or race in a particular class, it really doesn't matter. You can put on whatever number you want or no number at all. You could use your birthday, graduation date, wedding anniversary... If you want to use your hull number there is no requirement to put a 1 in front of it.

I had to laugh when I saw the number you proposed "13003". My sail number is 13013, with the numbers spaced close enough that it also could be read as "BOB". For those curious as to why that name (since it is not mine), I recommend the following light reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_SubGenius

If you anticipate having dockside chats with other Catalina 25 owners the hull number, and hence the sail number if they correspond, might be a conversation starter. You and other owners would compare different versions of the same boat. It's a nice thing if you're into socializing with other owners.
In racing it is a curtesy to the Race Committee so that they can more easily keep track of you. It's also helpful to RC so that you can communicate with them via VHF. For instance if you decide to drop out of a race you can call on the radio using your sail number for ID purposes. Often in races in our local area the entire race course is not visible to the RC.
Also for cruising a visible sail number is useful to communicate with commercial vessels. Instead of saying "I'm the sailboat on a NE course off Pt. Judith ..." You could say "I'm a sailboat off Pt. Judith with the sail number xxxxx..." I know we are instructed to use the boat name but the sail number is much more easily observed from a distance.

I do hope to be engaging with other C22 owners soon. Although, it doesn't look as if the Puget Sound group is that active. Catalina22.org shows a commodore for here, but no contact info.
I'll likely be getting a slip at Des Moines WA and keeping her there. I have North Sails coming over tomorrow to measure for a new main. I'll just go with what's on the hull, 3003 and I bet a 1 could be added later if required.

I'm not sure what your sail number has to do with conversing at the dock but if you want your hull number reflected on the sail not going with the leading 1 is a good call. That way you won't be confused with hull # 13003.

Lord only knows what social etiquette I would offend if I did it wrong.... It's why I'm asking.

FWIW, in July 1985, the Catalina New Design was introduced beginning with hull number 13343. I believe GeeDee's hull number and consequently sail number is 13003. My '88 C-22's # is 14776.

Atoning for such errors can require almost as much alcohol as renaming a vessel... :D
