Can someone decypher the hull number for me from the hull ID stamp. The embossed stamp reads 'HUN54747M80H27'. The previous owner didn't have the numbers put on the mainsail he purchased. I think I have hull number 747. (I can't believe they made over 54,000 of these boats!) I had asked Hunter by email, but they never responded. Thanx.

Partial answer

Glenn, This may help but isn't exactly what you are looking for The following number system applies to boats made after 1984 HIN characters are as follows; 1 through 3 = manufacturers ID code with Coast Guard 4 " 8 = manufacturers own serial numbers and letters 9 " 10 = Date of manufacture or date of Coast Guard certification. 9=month of manufacture 10= year of manufacture 11 through 12 = the model year of the boat Your boat uses a different scheme and I don't have the answer. I believe this was a very popular model that had been made for 5-6 years when yours was made. I would think your hull number is probably 5474. Just a guess based on new numbering system. Ward

Very UNconventional.

But not unusual. I have a bad habit of checking HINs in the marina. Rarely do they follow the conventions. However my own 1979 H37C, #074, is very conventional: HUN37074M79H

Corrected partial answer

HUN54747M80H27 HUN - manufacturers ID code. 54747 - serial # (whatever manufacturer chooses to use) M - model year format (used from 11/1/1972 through 8/1/1984) 80 - model year H - month of production ( in this case March ) 27 - not an official part of the HIN as only 12 digits are authorized.

HULL#

I just purchased a H27 with hull ID# HUN54123M78A. The number on the sail is 541. After a round or two with R.I.DEM. I know this number is right.

Format was changed at some point.

Glenn: There was a format change to the HIN numbers at some point in time. I thought it was before your model/year. I would suggest that you check the number again (also should be on your registration or title). Hunter can decipher the number for you if you cannot figure it out.

Hull#? Sail #?

My '79 27 had sail #13 on it when i bought it in'89,as this was bought new as a race boat have no idea where the number came from. There is no 13 in the VIN number. When i got new set of sails made for it i continued with the same number.I'm sure it is not hull number 13 in the 27'line,maybe 13th in 79? Really not a big concern.

The format was not change prior to the construction of Glenn's vessel. There was, however, both the Model Year Format and the Straight Year Format from 11/1/72 until 8/1/84. The New Format is from 8/1/84 to the present. Also required as of 8/1/84 is the confidential HIN.

How many...

27's were made? If I follow Joe's sequence, then mine would be hull number 547, which means that Hunter only made 6 of them in two years. Thanx for your responses everyone.
