I am in the process of re doing my interior. I have already torn out the old stained, smelly carpet hull liner. Should I go with the same type of carpet hull liner or Marine Vinyl?? The vinyl is easier to clean, less expensive The carpet has more insulation including sound insulation. Both should be easy to install ( measure twice, cut once : )

Go to sailrite website (see link) and look up headliners, the sent me some samples for a few bucks and one of the samples was a carpet type product that won't mildew the others are vinyl and I decided on the foam backed vinyl,my next project. Loved the april fool on the ODay site ;)

Think about condensation.

Mike: I realize that the stuff is old and smelly, but think about how many years it has lasted. I would be concerned about using vinyl because of the condensation. I would agree that you should check what Sailrite has. They have a decent selection and it will give you something to compare it to. Another thing that I was going to do on my H'31 was to glue/epoxy firing strips to the inside of the hull and then get battens made from teak, ash or mahogany and attach it to the firing strips. This would also allow you to add some insulation under the battens. If the firing strips are thick enough you could attach the battens with S.S. nails from a nail gun (3/4 - 1")

I am going to plank mine

I am going to use a plank material on my headliner, with some of the Refelectix insulation under it. Paint it high gloss bright white. First I want to lighten up the interior quite a bit, because there is a lot of dark teak in there, and I like the plank look. From what I have seen on the prices of vinyl material, it will probably be cheaper.

Planking

I have a friend that planked part of the interior of his boat with the cedar tongue and groove closet lining planks that are sold in HD and Lowes. It is thin, flexible and inexpensive and looks great. But, there is no reason you couldnt paint it. Tony B

I want to

I really want to brighten up the interior. It is very dark with the teak, and nothing light colored. I think the plank will look good, and the white will brighten it up quite a bit. Some nice shiny varnish on the teak and some decent damn lights, should do the job.

I've searched the archives

I am pretty sure I got a link about a good hull liner source here. I checked the archives for the link but couldn't find it. I have it on my home computer and will look for it when I get home.

Headliner

I used automotive headliner material on a 30 year old H26.It has a bit of insulation ,it looks good, and it was cheap(think it was $6/yard and was in rolls 6ft wide). If you use headliner material,be sure and use the special 3M adhesive so it won't bleed through.

Reinforced Fiberglass Panel ( R.F.P.)

Tore out all the fabric on my Hunter 30 ( V-berth, main cabin and quarter-berth) and replaced it with RFP sold at H.D. for $27 dollars a sheet. It took two sheets to do the entire boat. Indestructable, easy cleaning ( spray with fantastic and wipe) and gives the boat a great look. Have used it in the restaraunts for years( we cleaned at night with a hose and squeegee). Only found it in white but special colors might be available. Less than 75 bucks for the whole boat. Waterproof, worryproof, I love it. Pray for Wind, Lugeman

Securing planks to hull!

To secure the planks to the hull you can use plywood strips. These could be attached with epoxy or some of this crew may prefer to use 5200. Once these strips (verticle) are cured the battens would be screwed or nailed to the verticle strips. I would suggest prefinishing the battens prior to attaching, then it would only take one or two more coats to have a professional looking job.
