Beneteau Oceanis 381 Caribbean
Hi everyone...
We recently purchased a 2001 Beneteau 381 in the Caribbean from a brokerage. As I began looking further into the boat details, I noticed that the Hull ID number that I see stamped on the hull (stbd aft hull, just below toe rail) is different than everything I read about ID numbers. It is just a 16 digit number, no letters, and the numbers don't seem to correspond to manufacture date or anything. Is this a different number I'm looking at? Any advice/info would be great.

I have a 2003 331. The hull number is "BEY"... 5 digits (last 3 of these is the hull number for correspondence with Beneteau)... "C"... 3 digits (which I believe is month/year of production). Perhaps the difference may be a where it was built. France vs. US. Mine was definitely built in South Carolina.

The builder's plate which should be located in the cockpit, and should contain the hull ID number and the place of build is also missing.....our broker told us that it was built in SC though. Not sure what to believe right now though.

I'm assuming your boat is european built? If so, the hull numbers will NOT match what you are expecting. Will look like this:

A typical European ID number might be: 0144085-11230-0124 - the last three digits are believed to be the boat's hull number within the European manufacturing run. A contact at BeneteauUSA tells us that European boats would also have something similar to the BEY number to detail the build date and model year of each hull.

However, as someone else has noted, the plate in the cockpit with the CE rating will have the model year.

Thank you very much for that. The example you gave looks just like our hull number, but there are no spaces or dashes, in fact, the first 8 numbers are the same. I'm going to call Beneteau on Monday for further clarification.

I have a Beneteau 1997 381 with the hull numbers starting with BEY and ending in 97 but the paper work Coast Guard doct. said the boat is a 1996. I would be concerned with the hull numbers you have on your boat.

Yes I am quite concerned. Back to the European built Beneteaus...don't the France built boats have FR-BEY then a number? Where would I find out more about the European hull ID numbers that were referenced previously...01440851 etc. Has anyone else seen a 381 with this type of number?

That hull number is actually from a french built Beneteau First 235.

Mine;s about the same- 2005/2006. 05 was when construction started, 2006 finish and the 'model year'.

So, for those interested, I spoke to Beneteau and solved the problem. A beneteau with this style hull number was built in France and not destined for the USA. Our boat was, at the start of it's life, sold to Sunsail in the Mediteranean. Beneteau was very helpful.
