Catalina 30 Mark I Stockton, Mo
Hello All:

I recently purchased a Catalina 30, and I am trying to decide what to do about the hull. The PO had a vinyl graphic with the name of the boat on it. When I peeled it off I noted the color is different than the rest of the hull. The newly uncovered color is an off white, a yellowish-beige sort of color, while the rest of the hull is white. The Gel Coat on the rest of the boat is VERY chalky, and I wonder if the white looks white because it is so dead, and that if I sand down a ways the off-white color will come back.

My question is this: In 1976, did Catalina put out a color like I described? Or is it possible that the color under the sticker "morphed" into this off-white color due to different heat and/or sun absorption through the vinyl material? I tried to wet sand and polish a couple of areas of the chalky white part, and it sort of shines, but just a little polish on the off-white color really looks good! I'm thinking that the off-white is right, but I think that in order to get to it, I will have to sand the entire boat. Does this sound right?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Mike Jewell

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Mainsail has a process for restoring gel coat. You may want to get up with him on the main board and try doing that.

Yes, there is an off-white color

I have seen a few off-white Catalina 30's, and I'm pretty sure it was an available color at one time.
