I've been sailing my '97 H26 for a couple of months now, but she's always been very slow. The Autohelm Bidata knotmeter never registered more than 4.2 knots, even in 15 knot winds. Ususally we were below 3 when the wind was more fair. Today my friend brought his GPS aboard. Our little satellite friend revealed that my knotmeter was calibrated wrong. Way wrong. Turns out it was more than 40% slow. We recalibrated and now it's dead on. In fairly light winds we were able to do over 5 knots. That's more like it. Life is good. Ron M s/v Hydro-Therapy

22 knots!

Ron, I have the ST30 Bidata as well. While at the lake one day, a friend in a power boat came over to visit. He gassed it pretty good as he left in front of me. As I sailed through the spot where he had just been, the ST30 read 22 knots for a couple of seconds. That's the fastest I've been on my 240! ;-) Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

faster?

Does the wind whistle through your hair now that you know your boats true speed? My Autohelm Bi-Data was right on and I thought it stunk! I have added a 35 gallon water tank to the bow and moved my double battery system to the front under the forward settee. Now, that has truly made the boat faster! According to my GPS (since gov't unscramble) showed the boat will motor a six knots (with 8hp tohotsu) and has made a maximum speed so far of 7.2 downwind! Good Luck! piratet@micron.net

Faster

Todd - Sounds like moving some weight forward truly improved your boat's performance. Of course recalibrating the knotmeter only improved my perception of the boats speed. But as the old saying goes, perception is more important than reality. :D I was wondering, are you sailing an H26? When I look at mine, I sometime wonder if she isn't a little low at the stern. 1994 H-26

Dear Ron; Yes I own a '94. Almost all of the ones I've seen are stern heavy. Mine used to be almost 5" underwater with four people in the cockpit! Talk about turbulence! Since the weight addition/shift it has been appreciably quicker, now I can almost catch my friend's J-80 (when he's hove-to)
