My kicker was stolen and I am looking for an outboard light enough to bring home each trip. obviously tiller/pull start. Tohatsu has a light 6 HP 25" shaft that caught my eye but I don't know if 6 HP will move the boat well enough. I need the extended shaft as the 1982 Hunter '22 has a closed and very high transom. Tohatsu's 25" shafts are limited to the 6HP and the 9.9 but the 9.9 is only remote/electric start.

Anyone?

The 6 is plenty big for the 22.. I used one on a 23 for several years.

Re: HP Needed for '82 Hunter 22'

Presuming your wll is about 20' your hull speed is around 5.99 knots. Applying simple calculations (weight to power) 6 HP should move the vessel at max 4.7 knots. To achieve hull speed roughly 9.6 HP would be required. These are purely mathematical prognostications your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, we are talking a '82 hunter. Think much heavier than the last decade models. 3400 lb per manuals. Still feel the 6 is OK

Yes, OK.. long shaft.. won't plane the boat, but it will get ya there.. The boat I used a 6 on had a stated displacement of 3200 #.

Another thought, probably good to get a 7" pitch prop instead of the 8" that is standard. It will give you a bit more grunt.

I have a 6 HP suzuki 4 stroke and can do at least 5 knots on my 82 Hunter. One thing I had looked at was the weight of a 9.9 and it was more than the mount was rated for. The 6 Hp was within limits.

Biegen, just for reference, my h23 came with a Nissan 5hp longshaft. The rated displacement is 2450 lbs, and the outboard pushes it reasonably close to hull speed (best estimate - no knotmeter). I would expect that a 6hp would be sufficient for your heavier boat.

I had a fixed keel Hunter 22 equipped with a Honda 5.5 I never had the desire or need for more power. The 6hp will serve you just fine.

I have owned a H22 for 25 years, The first moter I had was a Honda 7.5 It was heavy and hard to remove. When it came time to replace it I purchased a Nissan 5 HP 4 stroke long shaft. It is plenty of power for the 1984 Hunter 22 and is the same moter as the Nissan 6 (weight wise). The Nissan 6 will be fine for your boat.

I would think the 6 hp would be adequate, but are you sure you want to transport the motor every time? It will be a pain in the, well insert the body part of your choice, and will give a delightful gasoline odor to your vehicle. You may want to consider better locking the motor to your boat, so the theives choose somebody else for their victim. Of course nothing is totally theft proof, but a padlock on the motor wingnuts. plus a locking bolt that takes a special socket to remove, plus a cable with padlock will probably send the potential thieves looking for easier prey, and you will not have to carry the motor every time you sail.

I use the Tohatsu 6 25" on my boat. every now and then it is a pain to start, but it moves the boat fine. I would agree with the last reply, try to lock the motor and forget about it.

I have same setup...

I have a 1981 Hunter 22 and when I got it I out in a 5 horse Nissan 4-stroke. I've done 5.5kts in it on flat water. i knew someone who had the same boat with a 2.5hp and claimed it was fine, but I wasn't about to test that. It's a 20" long shaft by the way, adequate, but the 25" would be better since in a chop every now and then it pops out. I have carried it on and off the boat several times and have the marks in my gelcoat to prove it. It sounds great to say it's portable but I can tell you as a reasonably fit person, it would be a significant deterrent to a day of sailing to have to drag that thing on and off every time. Instead I use a bar-type motor lock from Masterlock, availabe at amazon.com or westmarine or just about anywhere for that matter. I keep the boat in the water in Florida so it's in a vulnerable position 12 months a year for theft. The bar I think is effective and also it helps to be tied up next to other boats with nicer motors than yours! I even scraped off the labels from the cowl...
