I saw this this morning and found it fascinating. Haven't tried it but it looks like it would work. Leave it to the Japanese to come up with a brilliant concept. With much practice, I am guessing that one will not need any paper.

Not to be pragmatic, but the calculator app in my phone is much simpler to use. When I was young my father taught me to use an "abacus" and later in college I became proficient with the "slide rule" but what really all this told me is that these are all tools and to use the best one that is available.

Sure. He just has to raise to 1/3 power twice. Or is it, square the number and divide by 3? Maybe he could raise to 1/3 power then square it? Or, is it the other way around? :banghead:

That's too cool. Makes me want to go back to teaching math just so I can demonstrate that however, it would probably be frowned on by admin because it wouldn't be on the state mandated tests. Don't get me started. Wrong forum.
