How's rudder post fixed? (some play observed)

Some while ago I reported play between the Edson quadrant (actually a disc) and the rudder post itself. I have temporarily fixed this by clamping some emery cloth between the two quadrants halves. When I had the quadrant off, I noticed about 1/8" of play where the rudder post exits the top "bushing". My question is: is there anything adjustable or greasable in these parts? What constitutes the rudder post bearing?

Patrick, the shaft is just SS pipe on HDPE bushings. If the play is excessive you can replace the bushings or you can build up the shaft with some graphite filled epoxy. See the West (epoxy not marine) info about excessive rudder play repairs.

play between quadrant wheel and rudder post

When I got my 79 H33 6 years ago, it had considerable play between rudder post and quadrant with the loose fitting wearing the square keyway connecting the rudder shaft and the quadrant wheel. The permanent fix was to disassemble the quadrant into its two halves, (twisting off a couple of the bolts in the process) and then machining the mating surfaces of the quadrant wheel with nothing more sophisticated than a wood jointer. Since the quadrant is rather soft aluminum, this worked fine, taking very shallow passes. As I remember, there were some manufacturing bosses which helped keep the assembly squared up while machining. With a new keyway, it has been good as new with absolutely no play in about 4,000 miles of sailing. The twisted off bolts were fixed by simply drilling them out and through bolting with a nut. Don't know about the rudder post bearing since the H33 rudder post runs through a stainless steel tube which serves as bearing.
