Most rigid boom vangs have a block and tackle arrangement lead back to the cockpit. Pull on the line and the vang compresses, pulling the boom down. Release and the spring pushes the vang back up.
Recommend you NOT leave the vang uncleated. If uncleated, the full load of the vang will go into the internal parts which is likely to cause the end cap to shear out of the tube. Speaking from personal experience with a QuickVang on my Tartan 30.
