I have a older globalstar Qualcomm phone with a car kit so I have a external antenna and a docking station at the nav station. There is a serial cable coming from the car kit, my question is since I have never used the data capability of the phone, I don't know how to actually get emails, use the internet for grib files, etc. Once I connect the serial cable to the laptop using a serial to USB connector what then? What software do I need, do I need to dial a specific phone number? It's how I make this happen so I don't need a pact or modem.mimhave a icom 802 ssb but using the phone would be a much less expensive way to get the grib files etc?

Do you not have the user manual? I looked for it and found that it is using PPP (Point to Point Protocol) which is very ancient. I also noticed that the highest OS for Windows was 2000.

How is using a sat phone for data every going to be cheaper than GRIBS via SSB/Saildocs? Saildocs cost $250/year. You'll blow thorough that much sat data in 60 days.

I have a unlimited data pkg, at 59 mth, grandfathered in, I just bought the globalstar 9600 hot spot, I have sent emails and have accessed the web. It is slow but beats a pactor modem at 2-3 grand.

So then is it safe to say you got it working?
