How To Treat Cabin Floor?

Hey all,

I am starting the (massive) project of re-varnishing my exterior woodwork, but was also wondering what I can use on my main cabin floor as it is fairly ugly and grey at this point? I did a small test of the bilge hatch section with teak oil but I am assuming this is a bad idea since it would become too slippery.

It seems like the floor is teak veneer? Is a good washing all I can do? I searched around and people seem to recommend Dalys for the interior in general. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The wood itself is in great shape, just want to bring back a little shine on that beautiful multi color wood.

The veneer on your boat should be thick enough to take a careful sanding after which Daleys or Ultimate Sole would work well and are durable without being slippery. The latter is preferable but hard to find as it is not in production anymore.

Check my blog for after pictures using dalys to redo my sole from a couple years ago. I plan to put on another coat this spring, but only as a maintenance coat to fill in small scuff and surface scratches, the sole is holding up fine, and traction has not been a problem even with wet feet.

You can add friction by finishing with your faviroite and sprinkling salt on the last wet coat. Once everything dries you can wash t he salt away with water and leave many tiny marks which grip the foot nicely.

Can recommend Orange Oil for all wood and other surfaces. It pulls up black oily dirt and other ground in dirt. It is much better than lemon oil. There is a fairly good place in St. Petersburg to get it. Many others around too. Get the pure stuff.

I used a orange citrus based cleaner to clean my sole before starting the refinishing process, worked great!

Hey Paul,

I'm just getting ready this weekend to do the interior of my Hunter 34. I did a small strip with lemon oil and it looked good but I'm not stuck on it. Why do you think orange oil is better? Just wondering.

Orange oil seems to be a stronger cleaner. It cleans well with out harming the wood. What I like best is that it cleans dirty oil spots.
