I have been thinking about buying new sails to replace 10 year old sails that came with my 87 hunter 23. I've own this boat for 3 years now and race on a small lake on Sundays. Can anyone tell me how to tell if its time for new sails, and if my sails are passed their prime would new ones help me point a little better ?
Thanks Wally

Inspect Sails

Ten years could be significant aging for OEM dacron sails depending on how they've been treated. Do you need to tighten the leach line on the main whenever the wind picks up? Can you still flatten the sails or is there a deep 'v' or belly in the main? Is the leach hooked inward on either sail? Does halyard tension still result in changing the draft position as you need it changed? What kind of weather helm do you experience and at what wind speeds? How are you doing against similar boats on speed and pointing? Ask the best racer in your fleet to look at your sails and the rest of your rig set up.

Beyond sail condition, are the bottom and keel as smooth as they could be?
Would you benefit from adding a backstay adjuster to flatten the main and straighten the headsail luff? I noticed the 23 is a shoal draft boat; that's typically detrimental to better pointing, but presumably everyone has that same keel.

If after thinking about some of the above factors you feel new sails are part of the answer, a local sailmaker can be your best source and could typically measure the boat and discuss options with you.

Thank you for your response, I race in the open class and this weekend I had a 20 year race veteran with me and he said it is time to buy new sails. One thing I added this season is a windward sheeting traveler and I find that if I pull it a little above center that I point much better. Now if I can stop making rookey mistakes,I should do much better. Thanks Wally
