I recently purchased a Hunter 29.5 (1996 model) with a Furlex fuller. Prior owners apparently didn't believe in maintenance. I don't yet have a problem with the Furlex, and I want to avoid any future problems by servicing the furler. How do I lower the Furlex in order to wash and lubricate the upper part? What type of grease do I use? Any advice on servicing the Furlex will be significantly appreciated. Thank you!

I just now typed "furlex furler maintenance" into google and got a bunch of YouTube vids.

Note the spelling on furler ..... auto-correct spelling can be your worst enema.

I am not sure your question regarding " ...lowering the Furlex..", is the answer you need to simply lower the jib to the deck, which brings the Furlex top swivel down with it? Wash out both components, let dry, then grease with Furlex grease

I tried the YouTube search and scanned the first four videos, which were mostly junk, except this guy has it right

For advice on putting the jib back on the furling system, see

Recommend downloading a copy of the Furlex manual from Selden like the one below

If you do a full maintenance on the lower furler drum try to do it while the boat is out of the water. I mean the maintenance where you remove the outer drum housing and split the drum core to get access to the bearings inside. There are parts and screws that can fall off and be lost. The upper swivel has a plate on the bottom that slides down off to allow greasing of the ball bearings. Using a plastic syringe filled with Furlex furler grease makes it easier to get lubricant to all the bearings, upper and lower. You can order tubes of grease directly from Furlex. It used to be dark blue but the newer versions looks more like Vasoline.
