How to rig for reef

How do I rig the reefing lines on a "new-to-me" 1980 Hunter 36? I have two hooks at luff end of boom, and a movable car on starboard side of boom which leads to a locking cam. Also, two lines run the length inside the boom with self-locking cams at luff end of boom - not sure how these fit into the reefing situation. Here is what I think: the reef tack gets hooked into place and the reef clew gets pulled into place via the moveable car (put in place ahead of time). What I cannot figure out is what to do with the two lines which run the length of the boom, internal to the boom. Thanks.

Kenyon, no doubt.

Your H36 boom is likely the same as on my H37C. Except I am not sure about your "car" description. My two reefing lines exit at the rear of the boom, go up through the reefing cringle and back down to the boom. I have seen them tied off on cleats, on bales, and around the boom. Since my traveler is in the cockpit I have a bale for the mainsheet. The reefing lines tie off there. Up forward the lines exit the boom over what I guess are the cars and through a cam cleat. My lines stay at the mast. I have the hardware to take them back to the cockpit but like my clean decks. With a little planning you can do a single-line reef from the cockpit. You need some hardware to have the forward end of the line go up through the cringle and back down to the deck. Then back to the cockpit. Since I am up there anyway I just hook the cringle on the boom. BUT, you have to plan your reefs. Don't want to be doing that AFTER the squall hits. :)

I agree with Ed. Here is what the owners manual says: "1. Ease the boom vang and mainsheet - topping lift secured in position. 2. Lower main halyard so that tack reef cringle can be placed on goosneck reef hook and then re-tension main halyard. 3. Clew reef line must now be tensioned so that clew reef cringle is brought down snugly against boom. 4 re-adjust mainsheet and boom vang. 5. Use similar method for 2nd reef. 6. The reefed folds of sail can be rolled up and secured with short lines through the reef points and around the folds and boom. IMPORTANT: Be sure to unties these first when shaking out reef. 7. To unreef, reverse the process." I have the manual which I will scan on request. Send me an email by looking up my name in the owner's directory.
