I have tried to glue the vinyl back above the cushions and it keeps falling down. I have decided to just replace. My question is how do I clean the interior so I can replace the vinyl. I have a 1978 23' Oday. Thanks,

Replacing the liner

Did this to my O-26 recently. Mine had a foam backed nylon cloth. I tore off the old. The glue remained so I used a 60 palm sander to grind off the glue. Carefully as the hulls on these boats are very thin. Sailrite has fabric and spray adhesive (3M) for the replacement. They also carry vinyl if you are so inclined. They have a FL store but can't remember what city. I usually purchase on line. They will answer any questions you have via email.

Paint instead of replacing

Had to get rid of the liner of my '75 Mariner recently after discovering all kinds of mold and mildew behind the liner.
Caulked the joint between deck and hull and painted. At least there won't be an excuse for mold anymore and solved a few leaking problems at the deck and hull joint.

Reglue Fabric

'Henry' mastic will work to reglue fabric to walls if you do not want to get into the major project of replacing. Henry mastic is available at Home Depot, etc.

Many have painted over existing fabric/interior wall carpet on boats and got good results. If you do not have major mildew problems, painting would be easier, check archives for paints used by others.

When you do use mastic, you need something to hold the material in place until it sets, it is not contact cement or instant glue. Flat boards with other boards holding in place work.

glued new indoor outdoor carpet

i had to strip mine out also on my oday 20. the walls were loaded with old contact cement. i wanted to paint but it looked like it would be a nightmare trying to remove the old cement. i ended up using indoor outdoor carpet and went over the old contact cement with new cement. i used a carpet without any vinyl to trap moisture. there is only so much time and energy i want spend on a 34 yr old boat.

Do you have any pics of the job? I need to do the same on my O26 Ranger 1969.

Re: Replacing the liner

was your liner sort of like a woven thin carpet?. i have an oday 26, 1984, and due to deck leaks it is very musty. i am working on the deck leaks, but have to replace thel liner when i am done. when you replaced the liner, did the glue sand of easily, and did you have to remove it completely.
also, has anyone sanded it down, and just applied a primer and a coat of paint?

Check out a book entitled, "Fitting Out Your Boat" by Michael Naujok. I just happened to run across this book in our public library about a month ago, and it has a chapter on interior cover replacement with colored illustrations through out the book.

My Oday had a tan burlap that was falling off. It pulled out very easy. I used a stiff bristled brush . I also kept a shop vac on the outside of the boat and vacummed while I scrubbed.
The whole boat took less than an hour. I replaced it with a light blue indoor ,outdoor carpet.
For adhesive I used a water base type. This eliminated any fumes.
The fininshed look was impressive. The boat is warmer in spring and fall and cooler in summer.
It is also much quieter down below. I don't think I spent more than 50 bucks for the whole thing. It was done 4 years ago and still looks great.

Here are some pictures of mine along the way. I just finished ripping out the last of my liner this past weekend. I now officially have everything out of the interior that's coming out. I already have nearly identical liner ready to go back in. Got it from yourautotrim.com Decent price, but not as cheap as some alternatives. I just ordered the book Trinnka recommended, so hope to start putting stuff back in soon.

Dodge,
That main bulkhead along with the galley cabinet can be removed very easy. When I removed the center post, I left the cross piece in tact with it. If you can remove all the bulkheads from the cabin, that whole job will be easier for you. The stern bulkhead might give you a little trouble, but it can be removed.

JimV, you said..."Carefully as the hulls on these boats are very thin."
Not trying to start a war...however when they built these boats fibreglassing was in its infancy...they overbuilt...especially compared to today.

Trinnka, it's all out, has been for a while now. I just had those old pictures available. I'll try to take some more progress pics this weekend. You redid your bulkheads, didn't you? How many sheets of ply did it take if you did?

Dodge,
All I did was stain the wood and varnish it. All my bulkheads were in good condition. I liked the dark red Mahogany color that Chuck "Lucky Bum", did in the cabin of his boat "Get Away," so I did mine the same color. Right now, I'm working on my mast.
