I am bit stumped on this one although its probably going to be an easy chore once explained. I look at my compass on my Edison steering station on my Catalina 30 and wonder just how it comes off! I do not see how it is mounted and I not bold enough to try to pry it off! I did observe a large number of screws that are on the compass itself, but they would have to quite long if they are anchoring the compass to some type of mount. Any help is always appreciated. Should be four larger screws

on the top of the compass that when removed reveals will allow the compass to be removed. If you make the mistake of removing the smaller screws and picking the compass us from the dome, you will make the same mistake I did and let some of the fluid drain out. Oops!

Easy to do, just remove those screws.

There should be 6 screws, I think. Just remove the screws and the compass can be lifted off of the pedistal. There will be a wire for the compass light. The screws are not very long, since they just screws into a flange on the pedistal. Now, taking the whole pedistal off, that is another story. Not an easy job to attempt, let alone trying to put it all back together. Maybe someone else will have some good method to do this, but my method was a big pain. Good luck.

Removing compass

Remove the 4 outter screws, lift compass out and disconnect light wires. Done with the easy part. Next should be the compass base. Mine had 4 stainless phillips screws, I almost tore up the base trying to remove them. Once the base is remove you have access to the controls. When I put my compass back, I used 4 stainless bolts and anti-seizing on the bolts.

mine has 4 3.5 inch machine screws

holding it in the pedestal. you should remember to make a mark on the compass and the mount so you can put it back in the same orientation and hopefully not have to re-swing it.

special screws

Your best bet is to purchase new screws directly from Edson when you re-mount the compass. They are not very expensive, however be sure to measure and order the correct lengths. These are specially coated to eliminate galvonic reaction between stainless steel and aluminum. Removing them next time will be a breeze.
