Hello all.
I'm in a pickle. Had my hunter 34 soda blasted to remove the caked up bottom paint. When the guy removed the protective cover it peeled of paint from above the waterline. Had to sand and repaint the entire hull. Made a mistake and had my neighbor's son help with painting. I was so busy doing other things and painting one side , by the time I checked his work, there were numerous paint streaks. He was so excited to help I didn't want to deflate him but I explained about the streaks. I know, why did I let a teenager paint a sailboat? Learning opportunity and he was beaming with excitement. That was priceless for me. Anyway, any suggestions on smoothing without resanding, painting? Can I buff it out?

To be clear,

what are "paint streaks"? Brush streaks, drip marks, etc...?

What kind of paint? Some types cannot be sanded or buffed without destroying the protective top layer.

Was the gelcoat peeled or just some paint on the topsides?

Sounds like you will need to do some sanding. How much depends on how "deep" the streaks are. Then retouch

Brian. I commend you for taking the positive steps in developing a young person. Sure there were issues with quality. Get the young person back and work together to clean up the project. There is no learning without a couple of mistakes. The opportunity to improve is right there on the other side. The young often have no concept of quality till we give them the experience.
Next step is to get the young person on board the boat perhaps to go out and sail, even if you have to set it up, get someone to come by and remark on how good the paint job looks.

Pride in ones workmanship is difficult to develop.
