Help! I've got some dried West marin Wood Pro (house brand of Armada) on my deck. How do I get it off? What about the underlying stains? Note: My decking is fairly well oxidized (chalky).

Citri-Strip

I've used Citri-strip varnish and paint stripper with great success. Just don't leave it on too long. Wipe it on with a brush, then give a little scrub and hose off. Buy at Lowe's, Home Depot etc.

Teak stuff

I had heard that the West Marine house brand was actually Sikkens and that this resulted in Armada being excluded. However, they are all alkyd resin based products. I used to like Cetol but not any more. If it gets on the gelcoat and you don't get it right away (almost anything will work then- I used IG Pin and then water rinse). Once it has set it is not affected (to my surprise) by IG cleaners that will remove single part paint or varnish. The worst part is it gets into the pores. The ony luck I had was using "Goof Off" (esstentially Xylene) with a scuff pad but this still does not remove what is in the pores. Best thing is prevention rather than cure. ONe customer used a coat of pink on the surrounding gelcoat (removed wax of course). Next time I am going to use our rinse off masking gel that will not affect the wax. I have'nt tried regular d-limonene (in all citrus products) since it can damage plstics, but I think that citristrip has other goodies including some caustic that always makes a solvent into a good paint remover. I still have some spots and will experiment with what you guys told suggested. Jim Willis
