I am trying to remove the drain from my Seaward s600 in order to install an anode. It is very difficult to reach access the drain with a wrench, and there seems to be a specialty open ended (and angled) wrench of unknown size necessary in order to remove the tap. There is also some white sealant on the threads. Can anyone advise on what wrench I need to take the drain and how to best remove it without damaging it out so I can install an anode? Install instructions simply say it’s easy, remove the drain and install the anode.

A large open end wrench or adjustable wrench will probably work, however, the HW outlet will need to come out first as there may not be enough room to swing a wrench. The wrench will go on the flats behind the handle. Once you get it moved a bit, you can probably remove it all the way by hand.

Well, I have cleared out Lowes and Home Depot looking for a wrench that will fit behind the handle on the flats. And the closest I have come is a slim profile crescent wrench which doesn’t have long enough jaw to fully engage the flats. It just wants to slip, stripping the plastic flats (see pic). It still gets hung up on the fitting behind the handle
I saw a video of a removal in which a bent (like a z) open wrench with long jaws was used to loosen the valve, but I cannot for the life of me find the video, much less the wrench used. I do not want to remove my entire heater or start cutting at the settee in order to do this job - does anyone know of what wrench I might be talking about?
The spacing between the flats is either 7/8” or 15/16”.

Can you jury-rig something like a strap wrench (e.g. for an oil filter) to grab it? Or a clamping shaft collar to which you could attach a pull cord? Or, if you position the collar correctly, you could press a screw driver against the split or screw and (gently) tap it with a hammer.

Can you remove its knob and the white skirt that is below that. This will allow more room for your crescent wrench to rotate the valve. There is nothing special about that valve, you can pick one up at a hardware store. It is used in your backyard faucet.
