How to remove cabin door hardware--1999 B 411

Hello! I just bought a 1999 Beneteau 411. The boat had a minor electrical fire in the main cabin and I'm embarking on some renovation work this winter and spring. I consider myself pretty handy, but I'm having difficulty removing the cabin door handles. All I see are chrome pins. I assume I need to push or drill these out? After 18 years, they are very snug in there! Please help and let me know if I'm missing something! Thanks.

Good picture.. Not familiar with that particular piece, Tim, but is the other side identical? Sometimes the other side might be an easier one to pull?
It does look like a pin that was driven in and is probably tapered.. figure the smaller end then use a good punch to drive it out from the smaller end.. Looks like chromed over brass, so it should take a firm but not a gorilla hit to get it to move. Use something heavy to back up the handle when ya whack it.

Try some PB Blaster in that hole first. Oftentimes that is a spring loaded release that just needs to be depressed while simultaneously pulling on the handle. Living on a boat may have corroded it.

Thanks so much for your response. Yes, both sides look identical, but on the other side the pin is flush with the surface of the handle. As you can see in the picture, on this side, the pin is sunken about 2 mm. This the same condition for all 3 cabin doors. I look forward to heating from Gunni!

Sorry Tim, I got nothing! The cabin door handles are probably the only part of the boat I have not pulled apart. I see you have the trim cover screws off, does the hardware not separate from the door at that point (like home door hardware)?

No, I think the pin in the photograph is what hold the handles together as a unit. Once the pins come out, I assume the handles come off and then the mortise comes out after that, like a typical lock set. I am getting some B'laster as Allan suggested and will let you all know how I make out. Thank you for responding!

Be real careful with PB blaster and your interior wood finish and plastic parts. That stuff is agressive.

That is a cool tool, Allan .. I have never seen/noticed one .. kind of like a spring/slide hammer.. interesting.

Claude--It's really handy for setting nails, driving out hinge pins and the like. I have several of them scattered around. The amount of force it develops is incredible.

Thank you, everyone! I removed all cabin door handles. Here's how I did it:

1) Thoroughly saturate one of the two metal pins holding handle assembly with B'laster lubricant. Protect wood door panel from B'laster overspray.
2) The pins holding the handle assembly are slightly tapered. Using a nail set, drive pin from small pin end outward. Pin should drop out.
3) If handle does not pull off after removing pin, lubricate connection spine with B'laster lubricant. Protect wood door panel from B'laster overspray. If really stuck, you may need to do this several times over a series of days. Handle should eventually pull off.
