I am finishing up the installation of my new ST4000+ autopilot on my Hunter 280. Everything looks fine, except how do I get a wire in that pedestal? Help!!!! If you have any photos, that would be great! The back end of the motor drive for the ST4000+ is inside the pedestal and I need to get a wire to it.... Also, I chose the lower part of the clothes cabinet (port side) for the compass. Did anyone find a better / more convenient location?

About to being my own installation

I am fortunate to already have power to the pedestal (GPS + 12v outlet) so I'm not going to be much help. Other posts have suggested that an optimal location for a H280 layout would be the bottom of the galley sink cabinet as close as possible to the bottom and center of the boat. I'd very interested in your experiences with the installation - you can email me directly at pdido@attbi.com.

Edson Site

The edson site, I think edson.com has specifics on how to dismantle the pedestal to get the compass on right and not loose parts inside if that helps a little. You can download pdf sheets that are very helpful. Other than that, an electricians "fish tape" does wonders for this kind of project.

edsonmarine.com is a very useful site !!!!

They are responsive to questions as well.

H280 Pedestal does not have compass..

Hmmm... The H280 does not have a compass on the pedestal. Actually there are no electronics there, which makes it more difficult to see where wires can be routed through.

Wiring the st4000

I just put one in over the weekend. My hunter has nylon cords that connect the electrical panel to both sides of the boat. Find one end in the access panel next to the cabinet (port side) and use it to pull the wire through. After that, run the wire through to the head, following the furnace wires if you have them. Then, when you run it through the aft wall of the head, it will pop out of the wall like magic in the aft berth. I put the compass in the pedestal itself. I have to admit, I put in twice. The first time I mounted it right behind where I will put my winch handle - not smart.
