Hi, I am helping a friend fix his Capri 18' and we can't get the rudder to lock down. I was told we were missing some parts. Could you help us ID the parts and where we could purchase them?

Also, it would be great to see a photo of what these parts look like.

Please ignore the red & black tape. The owner put that on there while sailing because a nut fell off. That will be fixed soon also.

Thank you,

-Kevin

Capri 18 with a kick up rudder? Mine is a fixed rudder, and quite heavy.

Often on a kick up rudder there are two lines, one to raise it and one to lower it. Usually the second line has a cleat that locks it down.
Another version I've seen is a bolt that gets tightened to clamp it down - like if that thumb screw were bigger, you could tighten it down to the point where it would be difficult to lift.

I had to repair my tiller to rudder connection when I bought my boat. There was a lot of rot on the tiller, I thought there was a chance I was going to have to replace it. Fortunately it was all surface stuff. A good sanding and many coats of epoxy and varnish and it's held up great for 5 years and counting.

OK - I just googled "kick up rudder for Capri 18." Originally they had a gas strut to offer downward resistance to the rudder.
I bet you could find a replacement - a water friendly replacement might be a challenge.

Best of luck!
