C Old

I recently bought a MacGregor 21 that has some years on it but is still in good condition. However, I'm not sure how old it actually is. When I bought it the former owner said he thought it was a 1971 but the paperwork said it was a 1981. Does anyone know how I could find out for sure what year it was built? Is it marked on the boat somewhere I haven't discovered yet?

Hull

There are several ways to date a Venture. Pre 1970 The keel was suspended below the hull. Draft about 18" Late 1970 The keel was brought into the hull Draft about 12" About 1972 The boat got a hull liner. If it is a Macgregor it is from the late 70's For the early Ventures the hull number was drilled into a stringer under the cockpit. To see mine (December 1970)I have to go head first into the one bunk and look at the stringer for the bunk on the other side. i.e. looking under the cockpit. If it is after the federal requirements for hull identification there would be a plate on the stern with a hull number. There are brochures at this website http://www.macgregor-boats.com/ Check the member pictures on this website is also helpfull.
