The Harken jib furler model I have apparently uses a 'continuous' loop line that makes a single pass around the drum. The line needs to be replaced. Anyone with experience? Bob D

two ways...

You can order a pre-spliced line, in which case you will have to use a halyard as a temporary forestay and disconnect the actual forestay while you open the drum and install the loop. Or you can replace the line by threading a bitter end through the drum and splicing on deck. Hood sells pre-spliced loops but they are kind of pricey. West Marine sells spliced line by order, or any rigger can do the job.

Thanks Steve, I will try the West Marine option first.

Do it yourself

The 705 is not a Harken, it was made by Hood, and it was original equipment on this boat. Go to the the Hood website (you'll have to Google, it was sold to another company); the complete manual for the 705 is there in PDF format. It has the directions for making the single line splice. It isn't hard at all to do. You'll need a Sampson fid kit, which is about $20, and a new line. WAY cheaper than buying a pre-splice, which will require releasing your headstay---not an easy task on this boat with the furler recessed. Buy a little extra line to practice with. After you've done it once, it will take you about half an hour. I replaced the lines on traveler too, after getting the hang of splicing. Removed the cam cleats from the traveler back to the edge of the cabintop, and used slightler longer lines. WAY better control, especially from the helm. E-mail me through the owner's directory if you have questions. DRS s/v Synchrony '90 H30
