When I need to rebed skylights, port hatches, etc., by far the biggest part of the job is getting the old sealant out, which usually involves cutting, scraping, and digging. I never quite get all the old sealant out. Anyone aware of any product or procedure that works well for removing the old stuff? I'm not talking about 5200 here, but silicone or polysulfide (? I think that's it) type sealants. Thanks

Sealant Removal

Hi, I replaced the fixed ports last season, and for that job, i scraped most all I could, then cleaned the remainder with lacquer thinner. John s/v 50/50

3M Helped

Used 3M Adhesive Remover when I did our fixed ports last year. Let it soak in some, apply plenty of elbow grease using a plastic scraper, and repeat. Can use a razor blade as a scraper, but be carefull not to mess up the gell coat too much. Eventually you will get it all. Tried Acetone, but found that the 3M stuff worked much better.
