How to get offshore experience?

I'd like to find a crew position going north or south the washington\oregon coastline but havent had much luck. I could possibly find a class to take but I think it would be better to actually sail in these conditions. Maybe i'm wrong though...

I have a friend who goes offshore in a private sailboat. There was an interview process and a fee was paid to the owner for this experience.

You might be better off in a certified school. I did find this "Around Vancouver Island" that seems like a great experience.

Put a notice up at a club on their notice board. Some have online boards for crew.
