how to fix a scratch in the hull

I have a hunter 45 ds 2010, white hull. scratched the hul a few inches above the water line.
The scratch is about 6 inches long and about 1/16" deep. What materials should I use to fix it? what is the best procedure to do that?
Do I need to use the same materials used by hunter originally?
Thanks

Can you send a picture? I have a scrape and not a cut.
BTW after 1 year of waiting to "repair" my scrape, I can't see it anymore.;)
It sounds like yours is gelcoat only, which is a easier type fix.

You can buy any of a variety of gelcoat and gelcoat "repair kits". The trick is matching the tint perfectly. The original factory color changes slightly over time making a good color match an art form.

Thanks,
it is a little deeper then a scrape, it reached the glass. should I use epoxy as a filler? can somebody recommend a product that worked for him. BTW, the white hull didn't change in colour at all .

Gelcoat and auto shop bondo are pretty similar except for the red color of bondo. If you are going to have to paint it white anyway (previous poster noted that matching the tint is a PITA) save yourself some $$$ and the stress of runny gelcoat and the special alcohol curing agent and go with bondo.

You may be able to take a buffing wheel and carefully work the surrounding gel coat into the scrape, I had a couple of places where the previous owner scraped fairly deep, the Sapphire has a very dark blue hull, the scrapes were showing white (from beneath the gel coat) I was able to with rubbing compound cover much of the 20" scrapes, what didn't cover I used nail polish and then polished the whole area, you can hardly see the scrapes now. You must be very careful doing this that you don't overcook the gel coat and leave burn marks, you must keep the wheel moving!

First make sure that you can't just wet sand it (400, 600, 1000 and then polish). 1/16" sounds deep but maybe you are overestimating. Definitely, don't use bondo, it absorbs water because it has micro baloons and also is red and difficult to white color over; it is nothing like gelcoat. Don't use epoxy because polyester gel coat will not stick to it; nothing polyester will either. Buy some white gelcoat, with patchaid is good, or get wax (sometimes they call it exterior gelcoat and buy it at the place the pros buy). Buy some cab o sil (ground glass), don't use micro ballons, they are soft and absorb water. Get some mustard gel coat tint if needed. Use a toothpick to put a little, very little pin ***** of tint to match the boats gelcoat, usually a little bit beige; dab a bit on the surface to see. Then add cab o sil to the matched gel coat and make a paste that can be squeegeed to fill the crack (sand the crack first). Catalyze with mekp, you might go a little heavy if no patchaid. Overfill the scratch. Then sand smooth: 150, 220, 400 wet or dry, 600 wet or dry and 1000 wet or dry, careful to sand the sanding paper scratches well; you might be able to skip the 150 and 1000. Buff with polishing compound. If you are careful it will be unnoticeable, use at least the 20 foot rule looking at it. You may have to fill it a few times because of air bubbles. Wipe always everything in between with acetone. If that does not look good, then after filling you will have to sand a larger spot and mask the edges off with wide blue tape turned over on itself to form fine edge for spraying. Spray with gel coat. If it has patchaid it will set up quickly. If it doesn't then use wax mixed with the gelcoat to help it set up. After a little practice you will get the hang of it. It takes time, there are no short cuts or magic elixirs here. You are basically replacing what you scraped off.

Did it disappear or has your 20-20 faded?
I think once we become comfortable we tend to look past the little things.

Well kinda, if you close inspected, it would be seen, but it is ≈4" x 12" gelcoat only.
It will be SEEN when I do the fix, like CharlieSea's says.
