How to fill compass hole in bulkhead?

The other day I realized that my compass doesn't turn freely, so it shows neither direction nor heel angle correctly. The fact that I hadn't ever noticed before indicates I don't really need a compass on my 7 mile by 1 mile lake. It's also in the way of the companionway cover that I'm about to install so I was thinking of removing it. It's one of those round globe types that bulge out from the bulkhead, a few inches to starboard from the door opening. I've never taken it off but looking at the back from the inside, there must be a hole 3 inches or greater in diameter. Any suggestions on how to cover this hole, perhaps such that a compass can be re-installed if I ever sell the boat?

Hole in bulkhead

Get a deck plate from West Marine to cover the hole.
