The admiral has determined that the 3" thick Tempur memory foam mattress topper we purchased at a local big box store is the best boat investment we have made in many years. She really likes it. It makes for much more comfortable sleeping, and if shes willing to sleep on board more often, it means more sailing for me. We purchased a Queen size topper for use in the V berth of our 1985 Hunter 31. It should install nicely in two pieces, one across the wide end of the berth, another laying lengthwise to cover the narrow end. Right now its just laying in there in one piece. We need to trim it to size. Has anyone ever cut this stuff? Any recomendations on how to trim it? What tools are best?

We've found that using an electric...

carving knife works best on cutting foam material. We picked one up for next to nothing from a local thrift store. It really works swell. Terry

I've never cut memory foam, but...............

...............I've found the very best tool for a do-it-yourselfer to cut foam to be an electric carving knife. I'm sure it will work for the memory foam. Good luck! Tim

Just a good sharpe knife

I did the same for my Hunter 34. I used a boning knife I got at the dollar store and just traced the outline of the cushions before I cut, then put the cover over it.

CUT 4" ON MY '79 30'

Similiar story, I cut down my 4" memory foam by laying the present cusions on top and marking with a magic marker. Then I found it was best to use a utility knife with brand new blade and cut in slicing motions. It took up to three cuts to go from top to bottom. My mistake was not taking into account the angle of the hull in the v-berth. I should have moved the line several inches and cut on an angle for a better fit. Good luck Ian s/v Meant to Be

Electric Carving Knife

Using one is a very similar feeling to cutting through warm butter. I have done it several times and the knife works like a charm.
