I have a 1984 Macgregor 25. It appears that to put the Swing Keel down that you just crank counter clockwise. Is this correct or is there a release knob also? Please feel free to email me at michaelcabot1@aol.com
You are right crank counter clockwise to lower, it helps to back it up clockwise and then give it a bump counter clockwise. I understand it is on a clutch that loosens when you crank counter clockwise. Mine is becoming more stubborn but it is also locking in place better than before. I used to have to tie a rope to the handle to keep in from lowering but not lately, it is become harder to lower. I am afraid to put silicone on the clutch or anyother lubricant. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the matter?
Do not,,,, repeat do not put any lube of any kind on the clutch of the brake wench,,if in doudt go to northern tool and get a new "brake wench",,I went with the 1200 lb. model,,if was only &52.00 new.
You must crank it down. If it released to fast it will tear off the boat. Remember it weights about 600 lbs. I did have to replace the unit one time and it was not difficult.Tom Wieken
When you guys put that 1200 lb. winch on, 1)did it fit the existing holes etc.? and 2) did it make cranking up the keel much easier. Mine takes about 42 cranks and those last 20 are rough on the ole boy. It is no doubt the original 800 lb winch. appreciate your reply.
I gave up on the hand crank, and went to Harbor Freight and bought a 39.00 electric winch. I had to redrill the mount holes, but it has been absolutely wonderful for the last year. I kept the old winch, just in case. With the keel down, it would be easy to reinstall the manual and crank it up should my electric sstem fail.
The 1200 lb crank works fine, no heavy load on cranking it up,,and yes it does take a few cranks,,some redrilling was needed but went very well and easy to do,,I had thought about the electric crank also,,but decided not..maybe later on that change....
That's the one! 1200lbs,,,also to all,,you must use the 7/19 rope cable,,not reg strand, and it needs to wrap around the winch spool at least 3 times when fully down,,MacGregor saids 3/16".. I had to do a fast repair and could only find 1/4"..that workd well also,,,
