How to clean fuel injectors in a diesel?

Our 2GM20F is blowing black soot out of one cylinder when under high load. Air and fuel filters have just been replaced but the condition continues. Number one suspect now is a dirty fuel injector. In the automotive field there is a machine that will clean the injectors on a gasoline engine. Will this work on a diesel? Also is there any fuel additive out there that may clean the injectors?

Rebuild them

Remove all the injection nozzles and take them to a diesel fuel shop for a rebuild. They should be done as a set for proper calibration.

Just curious how you have determined

that a dirty injector is the problem. Black smoke under a load screams "elbow" to me. Have you checked the elbow?

Sounds like a clogged exhaust elbow.

Replace your mixing elbow and things will be fine. Gumout makes a diesel fuel system cleaner.

There are additives

If your problem is fouled injectors, there is a diesel fuel additive you can buy for cleaning injectors. Any automotive store may have it.

Start with the easiest fix....

like a fouled prop before you get too carried away, unless you're sure it's only smoking on one cylinder.

clean injectors

I use valvtec DSL aditive the stuff uorked good but then I started to have a starting problem ,with smoking when the motor was run .I thougth that i would raise rpms from 2000 two 2300 then to 2500 the motor ran fine but was a little hoter . After a few days the moter was starting better and runing with less smoke .One morning I started the moter to go out and it started up fine ,but then a injector clogged . It was smoking and nocking and i killed it . After starting and stoping and then runing it again it cleaned it self .since then i try to run hot before i kill it for about 2 minits then cool down. I also use lucis fuel add for diesels I used a quart for 5 gal at first. Then i dump some in when i fill the 5 gal cans, no problem since no smoke no hard starts. John

The prop was recently pulled,

cleaned and painted. The exaust elbow was removed and cleaned last year. The problem seems to be slowly correcting itself. We had recently replaced the belts and found a clogged air filter from the fine powder coming off of them. The replacements were factory belts and were tightened to specs. We replaced the air filter as well as the fuel filter and water separator and at first the condition did not improve prompting our seeking information but the more we run the engine now we find our rpms going up and the last time we used it yesterday it ran good. We could only get it to smoke at close to redline on a trial run and the miss is gone. We also topped off the tank with 10 gallons of fresh fuel prior to going out so that may have helped. The boat was laid up for 6 months during hurricane season as we did not want to disturb deployed anchors away from the dock. We have another boat an H27 we daysail all the time. We will continue to monitor progress. A mechanic once told me to give my car an "italian tune up". When I asked him to explain he said to take it out on the interstate get it up to high rpm's and sustain the speed for 15 to 20 minutes. It would clean carbon built up and maintain optimum fuel flow, he indicated or I could pay him to clean the caburator and replace the plugs. I guess the moral of the story is to run the engine frequently as it was designed to be ran.

New nozzle tips

You may want to just pull the injectors and install new nozzle tips on them. The old ones are clogged most likely. You would hate to leave your engine plugged with rags while you local diesel service shop ordered the tips only to find that they were on back order from somewhere. You can do this replacement in the boat. If you friendly diesel mechanic likes to fish, invite him to come and bring his portable injector tester an fishing pole.
