How to change reefing line on Hunter 42 Passage single line reef system?

We have a ‘96 Hunter 42 Passage in need of new reefing lines. It utilizes single line reef system with a pulley system mid boom to equalize the leech portion of the reef line with luff portion. The system currently sticks requiring the use of a dock pole to pull line free on the leech section to hoist the mainsail! Is there a way to service the pulleys?

FWIW, on our P31-2 with a similar reefing system, there is a lot of friction when raising the main after a reef has been put in, due to reverse pulling the reefing lines into and back through the boom.

What I often will do, is prior to raising the main, first pull the reefing line out of the boom by hand at the clew and then the tack. Then the main goes up as nortmal.

Same here! I keep a boat hook handy to lean out the cockpit to pull out enough slack! Would like to correct at some point!!!

Got diverted to many other projects!! Back on new line for reefing. Does anyone know the line size spec for reefing lines on 42 Passage? I currently have 5/8” on reef#1 and 1/2” on reef#2 on the forward section on line. Both aft sections of #1 & #2 are 5/8”!!! The sheaves on aft end of the boom appear to be 9/16”.

If the sheaves are 9/16 then you should be looking at 1/2 max. Perhaps 7/16's

Here is the spec on 7/16 :

Our torque balanced braid ensures maximum tensile strength and excellent abrasion resistance. Idea for halyards, sheets, guys and control lines where strength and low stretch are required.
