I've been using VC 17 for years and love the way it goes on smooth and thin with a low nap foam roller. I've read that after it has dried you can "burnish" the finish for a smoother finish. How exactly do you burnish the hull? What do you use? How difficult is it? Is it worth the effort? Yes I do a bit of club racing.

my son's crew uses 800 grit wet sand followed by newspaper. Is it worth it? All else being equal, when tenth's of a knot count...

To burnish VC17, get a 'quality' magazine with the 'shiniest' paper that you can find ... ie.: a magazine paper thats 'clay filled'. Next best is a 'stiff' newspaper. Then 'wad it' into a big ball to fit your palm and 'scrub' the surface. Such burnishing will 'move' the surface irregularities and essentially 'smear' them into a flat, highly polished surface.

For errors and 'proud' irregularities, 'spritz' or mist the surface with acetone and 'knock down' with a polyethylene trowel, wait until 'hard' ... and then 'burnish'.

You dont want to 'sand' VC17, you want to 'smear' it. Burnished VC will 'release' growth MUCH faster than when 'rough'.

richH is right - don't sand, but work to smear it. Another trick is to use carpet - not shag, but a short nap carpet that's a little stiff. Wrap it around a block of wood and rub the paint surface to "smear" out those high spots and develop a shine. If there are truly rough areas, use the back of the carpet - its harsh enough. But don't sand.

Very easy and really worth the little effort . I simply use a worn out 400 grit , you will feel the difference with your hand and big difference in very light air , it takes about 15 minutes for a 27 footer . Bernard Larocque .
