This spring, I discovered that the shaft nut and tighting nut were nearly off and leaking water. I tightened both them down by hand to where the shaft was not leaking water anymore. I still get a small line of water from the shaft under my engine. My Question is "how do you determine how tight they should be?" Thanks John

Stuffing Box

You are speaking of the stuffing box. It is imperative that water leak into the gland to provide lubrication to the shaft. About 10 drops per minute (one drop every six seconds) is sufficient while underway.

stuffing box

I agree with Paul. Others might say that it doesn't need to drip quite so much. The objective is that while underway, the stuffing box does not get hot to the touch else you'll score the shaft and that'll cost you more. I recommend using wrenches to ensure that the lock nut is up tight because I've had mine come loose and that let's in lots more water. Peter
